In the typical week, EastEnders airs four half-hour episodes in a time slot of 8.00 pm on Mondays and Fridays, and 7.30 pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Each episode was repeated the same evening on W, with a weekly omnibus edition on Sundays.[58] Each episode was executively produced by Sean O'Connor, who continued his role from 2016.[59] Oliver Kent was also brought in as the Head of Continuing Drama Series for BBC Scripted Studios, meaning that Kent would oversee EastEnders along with O'Connor.[60] On 23 June 2017, it was announced that O'Connor had stood down from the role with immediate effect, and that John Yorke, formerly executive producer from 2000 to 2003, would take over in a temporary position. Kent said, "John Yorke is a Walford legend and I am thrilled that he will be joining us for a short period to oversee the show and to help us build on Sean's legacy while we recruit a long-term successor."[61][62] Yorke is credited as an executive consultant. O'Connor's last credited episode was on 24 November, with Yorke's first being on 27 November.[63]

All official ratings cover a period of 28 days from the original broadcast, and are taken from the Broadcasters' Audience Research Board (BARB).[64] Airdates, credits, running times and episode summaries are taken from episodes, the official EastEnders website[57] and BBC programmes schedules.[65] Episode numbers are taken from Radio Times.[66]

January

[edit]

January saw the departures of sisters Ronnie Mitchell (Samantha Womack) and Roxy Mitchell (Rita Simons). Multiple exits were filmed in an effort to stop the storyline leaking, with the cast not knowing which ending would be used.[67] After the episode in which Roxy and Ronnie die in a swimming pool, EastEnders released a short trailer, teasing what would be coming up in January, including the aftermath of their deaths, the Carter family being in crisis, the arrival of Emerald Fox (Doña Croll), mother of Denise Fox (Diane Parish) and Kim Fox-Hubbard (Tameka Empson), and Michelle Fowler (Jenna Russell) revealing her secret.[68] Also this month, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) discovers that he is the father of Denise's baby,[69] and Albert Square is struck by a "huge disaster", where a double-decker bus crashes into the market and leaves 11 characters' lives in danger.[70]

Ronnie and Jack prepare for their wedding, visiting the grave of their son James Branning before they go to the wedding venue. Ronnie's mother Glenda and half-brother Danny bring her sister Roxy back to Walford, and Ronnie invites them to the wedding. When Ronnie's cousin Phil is unable to attend due to being in hospital, Ronnie asks Roxy to give her away instead of Phil. Roxy tells Ronnie she is lying to Jack, as he does not know Ronnie has asked Roxy to move to Ongar with them, so Roxy leaves, saying she will ruin the wedding if she stays. At the wedding, Ronnie leaves to find Roxy, and then tells Jack about Roxy moving with them; he accepts this. Ronnie and Jack marry.

Mick finds a card from the Samaritans in his son Lee's phone case; Lee initially denies needing it but then admits that he organised the recent robbery at Mick's pub, The Queen Victoria (aka the Vic), and felt so bad about it that he contemplated suicide; Mick says he should have gone through with it, but later regrets saying this, though cannot forgive Lee.

During the wedding reception, Roxy and Jack's brother Max dance and flirt, and later that night, he goes to her hotel room, while Ronnie and Jack retreat to theirs, but are interrupted because Jack's children, Amy and Ricky, want him to read them a bedtime story, so Jack asks Ronnie for 20 minutes, during which she takes Roxy to the balcony to talk and drink, leaving Max in Roxy's room where he finds her cocaine. As Jack reads to the children, Ronnie and Roxy find the hotel's swimming pool; Roxy jumps in, while Ronnie is unable to remove her wedding dress; Ronnie sees Roxy motionless at the bottom of the pool and dives in to rescue her, but in doing so, she is weighed down by her wedding dress and drowns; both sisters are dead.

Broadcast on Sunday at 7.00 pm as an extended episode for New Year's Day.[71] Instead of the show's usual closing credits and theme tune, the screen fades to black, the credits roll over the black screen, and no theme music is played. After the broadcast of the episode, an alternative ending was released on Snapchat, in which Roxy dies but Ronnie survives.[72] This episode was the top requested programme on BBC iPlayer in the period 20 December 2016 to 2 January 2017, with 1,310,480 requests (not including any outside of that period).[73]

February

[edit]

February saw the start of a "controversial" storyline in which a naked photograph of Shakil Kazemi (Shaheen Jafargholi) is sent to everyone at his school.[82] This month also saw the departures of Babe Smith (Annette Badland), after she makes the Carter family's debt problems worse and abandons her sister, Sylvie Carter (Linda Marlowe), by a canal,[13] and Lee Carter (Danny-Boy Hatchard),[12] as well as the arrival of Preston Cooper (Martin Anzor), the former student of Michelle Fowler (Jenna Russell) who she had an illegal relationship with in Florida.[24] Following Preston's arrival, he tried to reignite his relationship with Michelle while beginning a fling with Michelle's niece Bex Fowler (Jasmine Armfield).[83] A February episode featured some racist graffiti outside The Queen Victoria pub following a Polish night hosted by Konrad Topolski (Piotr Baumann). The script received some negative reception, although it was defended by writer Leo Richardson, who said the story was "rooted in reality".[84] Towards the end of the month, Dot Branning (June Brown) loses control of her car while driving with her great-grandchild Matthew Mitchell Cotton, endangering both their lives.[85]

June

[edit]

The spring trailer released on 11 May 2017 also teased some of June's storylines, including Dot Branning (June Brown) suffering a fall, the arrival of the Taylor family, made up of single mother Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) and her four children Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), Bernadette Taylor (Clair Norris), Riley Taylor (Tom Jacobs) and Chatham Taylor (Alfie Jacobs), who immediately cause trouble, and the returns of characters Sonia Fowler (Natalie Cassidy), Robbie Jackson (Dean Gaffney), Yolande Trueman (Angela Wynter) and Linda Carter (Kellie Bright). It also shows Steven Beale (Aaron Sidwell) lashing out at Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald), the sister of his girlfriend, Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa), and Bex Fowler (Jasmine Armfield) seeming to buy a pregnancy test, and someone looking at a positive test.[116] It emerges that the positive test belongs to Lauren,[123] and that Bex is buying a pregnancy test for Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper) after Keegan Baker (Zack Morris) claims that they had sex while she was drunk, a storyline that also leads to Louise taking a chlamydia test and Keegan being accused of rape.[124] At the end of the month, it is revealed that Linda's mother, Elaine Peacock (Maria Friedman), is no longer ill as Linda stated to her family and that Linda is hiding a secret.[125]

July

[edit]

July's storylines included the conclusion of the ongoing bullying storyline at Walford High's school prom, during which Louise Mitchell (Tilly Keeper) confronts bullies Madison Drake (Seraphina Beh) and Alexandra D'Costa (Sydney Craven), who push her onto lit candles.[128] Louise suffers severe burns as a result of the incident. Actress Lucy Benjamin reprised her role as Louise's mother, Lisa Fowler, for a short storyline, having last appeared in 2010.[129] The storyline also served as the final appearance of Beh and Craven.[130] Louise's father, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden), also returned to the series after a six month break.[131] This month also saw the broken relationship between Lauren Branning (Jacqueline Jossa) and Steven Beale (Aaron Sidwell) take a twist as he and Lauren's sister, Abi Branning (Lorna Fitzgerald), continue their secret affair.[132] Lauren decides to end their relationship and move to New Zealand, but Steven stops her leaving by falsely claiming he has a brain tumour;[133] the BBC received complaints about the false-tumour storyline due to some viewers' personal experiences of cancer, to which the BBC responded by saying, "there is absolutely no intention to belittle this serious condition or the suffering of those afflicted by it. Indeed, it's the very seriousness of it that reveals the extent of Steven's dark side as he struggles to deal with a failing relationship."[134] Also, Whitney Dean (Shona McGarty) returns and reveals she is engaged,[135] and Bernadette Taylor (Clair Norris) discovers she is pregnant, sparking a teenage pregnancy storyline,[136] in which her mother, Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley), questions whether her son, Keanu Taylor (Danny Walters), is the father, although the father is revealed to be a school friend.[137][138]

Instead of the usual credits, at the end of the episode, a list of several people involved in the making of EastEnders in 2017 was shown, with a dedication to Dave Young and director Paul Annett.[156] The BBC received complaints from viewers about the delivery of Abi's premature baby, who thought it was "inaccurate or insensitive"; the BBC responded by saying they had sought professional advice and in extreme circumstances such as Abi's brainstem death, they "were advised that at the discretion of the medical staff, and if it were deemed safe for the baby, a family member could be allowed to briefly hold the child", that "an element of dramatic licence can be used in order to effectively tell the story" and that "that this was not intended to be representative of all premature births".
